International Day of People with Disability
The International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is an internationally celebrated day, which is sanctioned by the United Nations. Its purpose is to raise public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and to celebrate their achievements and contributions to society.
IDPwD is unique among community awareness days, as it unites disability organisations, businesses, federal, state and local governments and the community. The day is a collaborative effort to celebrate and acknowledge the experience and expertise of people with disability.
According to the IDPwD website: “The theme for International Day of People with Disability for 2019 is ‘Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda’. According to the United Nations, this year’s theme focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as envisaged in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which pledges to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognises disability as a cross-cutting issues, to be considered in the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.”
